PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation’s Education Outreach Program (EOP) has inspired over 75,000 students and teachers since it was established in the late 1980s. It continues today to expand its reach into school curriculum in grades K-12. Students are immersed in the vivid, culturally influential architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright through unique interdisciplinary enrichment programs administered by its Founder and Director, Ms. Shawn Rorke-Davis.
The objective of the EOP is to provide opportunities for people throughout the world to learn about the rich legacy as well as the many concepts relevant to the future of the built and natural environment of the most widely recognized American architect.
Ms. Rorke-Davis stimulates a learning environment in which students with the full spectrum of learning styles will be challenged. The combination of theory and philosophy with hands-on manipulation of materials during "Designing Your Dream Space," a highly individual design and model-building program, develops creative expression and problem solving in multifaceted activities adaptable for grades 4-12.
The Program nurtures an atmosphere in which students discover architecture's importance in human activity and the critical relationship between buildings and the environment.
Wright's legacy lends itself to an organic teaching approach integrating student's existing abilities and knowledge in science, art, language, writing and math computation. Working in collaboration with classroom teachers, EOP has been integrated into the following academic disciplines: history, art, humanities, social studies, English, advanced physics, honors geometry, drafting, science, gifted programs, as well as multi-graded and multi-lingual classrooms. Both gifted and underserved students demonstrate successful outcomes through this process.
College students and professional educators have attended continuing education seminars, lectures and presentations. The educational community is encouraged to seek creative materials, classroom presentations and project planning assistance throughout the year.

Design Your Dream Shelter
“Design Your Dream Shelter” introduces students to Frank Lloyd Wright, architecture, and construction using a personalized, interdisciplinary, hands-on approach. Participants are asked to view the world around them in new ways, to understand that architecture is more than just “buildings.” Wright’s early apprentices lived in white canvas tents that were called “shelters”. Students will tour such sites and visit others more recently created. In class they will explore ways of living close to nature in a sustainable, exciting way. The goal is the creation of a personal vision of a dream shelter. Participants will draw a two-dimensional floor plan, and build a landscaped 3D model of the shelter. Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture students join Ms. Rorke Davis in conducting these courses. The course is open to students in Grades 5-12. The enrollment fee of $225 per session includes all materials, lunch, and a snack. Maximum 12 students per class. Must have 5 enrolled to hold a session.

Design Your Dream Space
Architecture combines art, math, science, and new technologies to create innovative spaces in which to live, learn, and work. This class is an immersion into the world of what an architect really does. Students discover the roles of client, designer, and builder as they take an initial concept through the design stages to a finished model. Each selects a site, draws a two-dimensional floor plan to scale, and builds a furnished, landscaped 3D model of a compact dream home.
Environmental needs and sustainability are discussed. The educational atmosphere is supportive and relaxed. Each child works at her/his own level, in a manner that inspires individual curiosity, discovery, and imagination. This is our only session until summer architecture camp. The course is open to students in Grades 5-12. The enrollment fee of $375 per session includes all materials, lunch, and a snack.
COMPLETED
Jewelry - Basic Wire Wrapping
Students will learn basic wire wrapping techniques and gain basic tool and materials knowledge from noted local jeweler Melissa Zaki. Fees include all materials needed to complete a beautiful pair of earrings inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s love of Nature and his stained glass designs. This class is project specific but structured to enable participants to apply what they learn to future creations. Students may not substitute other beads or materials for this class. This course is best suited for students from Grades 7-12 and for adults. $85 per session. Maximum 8 students per class. Must have 4 enrolled to hold a session.
Photographing Wright
Experience the Sonoran Desert and Wright’s architecture at Taliesin West as viewed through a camera lens. Students will explore composition, light, and shadow using the viewfinder. They will take pictures of landscape scenes, desert plants, and items in the collection of art pieces displayed around the grounds. Local photographer Andrew Pielage and Taliesin students will conduct the sessions. Participants must provide a digital camera and bring a cord that connects to a computer. Adults are welcome to enroll in advanced classes. The course is open to students in Grades 7-12 at $95 per session. Maximum 8 students per class. Must have 4 enrolled to hold a session.
Figurative Sculpture
This course is an ongoing studio setting providing guidance and encouragement to adults and high school students with some experience at working with clay who want to experiment with figurative sculpture. The material will be water based ceramic clay. After drying and curing, the sculpture will be fired and returned to the student. The intention is to work in less than life size scale and practice the nature and structure of figurative forms. Students may do a sculpted portrait of a head, torso, or other element of the human form such as hand or foot. Instructor Brian Maxwell will provide some suggested resource materials for reference imagery. Abstraction will also be discussed as a stylistic method. The class will be ongoing and discussion of each
student’s progress will be welcome. The enrollment fee of $375 per session includes tools and materials. Maximum 7 students per session. Must have 3 enrolled to hold class.
Ceramics
Art created using ceramic techniques can be timeless and thought-provoking. Many of the earliest artifacts made by human hands are of fired clay. The nature of the material leads the artist to discoveries about form, volume, texture, and color, and the results are highly individualized. Instructor Brian Maxwell will guide participants in this series of evening classes. Wheel throwing, slab work, and other methods are explored primarily using high temperature clay and
glazes with expressive results. Each student will experience and enjoy the medium in her/his own way with guidance and suggestions. Perfect for adults eager to continue an activity they love and high school students with some previous experience. The enrollment fee of $375 per session includes tools and materials. Maximum 7 students per class. Must have 3 enrolled to hold a session. Additional classes can be arranged directly with the artist at a cost of $25 per hour.
Design a Chair
This class provides a design studio in which a student can imagine, envision, experiment, and ultimately create a production model of an original design for a chair or other useful furniture item. Instructor Brian Maxwell will share his child’s rocking chair as an example of this
construction method. Detailed developmental models may be made of paper, balsa wood, and matte board. All physical work will be performed during class, and will include the drawing of plans, cutting matte board and other materials to scale, forming or gluing various elements to assemble the product. The works in progress will be
photographed for evaluation. The enrollment fee $200 per session includes tools and materials. Maximum of 7 students per session. Must have 3 enrolled to hold class.

Photographing Wright
Frank Lloyd Wright was not only a marvel in the world of architecture; he was a revolutionary, creating harmony between the natural landscape and man made structures. Natural shapes, colors and forms in the Sonoran Desert influenced several of the key features that uniquely define Taliesin West. Local Arizona photographer, Andrew Pielage, will guide students on a weeklong photographic journey through both Taliesin West and the desert surrounding it. Students begin with a brief desert walk to discover and photograph Wright’s inspiration in their natural forms. Later they will photograph architectural elements that reflect the desert inspiration. Images will be examined and discussed during the week. Learning the rules of composition, how to frame an image, and consideration of light and shadow will help participants continue to grow in their creativity and skill at photography. Students are required to bring their own digital camera and cord to connect to a computer. Grades 7-12. Fee is $250.00 per session and includes snacks and a non-refundable $50 registration fee. Limit 8 campers per session.
Ceramics and Pottery
Art created using ceramic techniques can be timeless and thought provoking. Many of the earliest artifacts made by human hands are fired clay. The nature of the material itself leads the artist to discoveries of form, volume, texture, and color, and results are highly individualized. Local Artist Brian Maxwell and others will focus on hand building to familiarize campers with the medium. Then using a potter’s wheel, slab work, and other methods with the high temperature clay and glazes campers will develop very expressive results. Each student will experience and enjoy the medium in her/his own way with guidance and suggestion and have at least one completed piece at the end of the two week session. Grades 7-12. $600 per session includes all materials, tools, snacks, lunch and a $50 non-refundable registration fee. Limit 7 campers per session. Additional classes can be arranged directly with the artist for $25 per hour.
Wright for the Future
Students live in a world where communication is almost instantaneous. The Internet has made our world feel much smaller than ever before. News events can travel around the globe in a matter of minutes. Distant cultures and countries are part of our daily television and online viewing. In this project students grapple with some real world challenges: global warming, pollution, new trends in energy and communication technologies, advancements in construction methods and new modes of transportation as they plan and design an ideal city set 100 years in the future. Creativity and ingenuity are required to solve the architectural challenges of the 21st century. Individuals research exciting newly constructed concept buildings and cutting edge architects. The team collaborates on construction of a site map, models of the wide variety of structures required in a city, and decides on a city name. Each camper builds smaller models of these large structures, turning ideas into a three dimensional reality. Grades: 5-12: $400 per session includes all materials, lunch, snacks and a $50 non-refundable registration fee. Limit 20 campers per session.
